In a proper bite, the upper teeth only slightly cover the lower teeth. The overlapping part has to be approximately 3 mm. If the upper teeth cover more than 3 mm, this is called an increased overbite or deep bite. When the teeth do not overlap, this is called an open bite.
A deep bite is one of the most commonly diagnosed malocclusions. An open bite is less common. When the teeth overlap properly, this has a protective effect on the dentition, as it prevents excessive pressure and force on the teeth in the back of the mouth. In the absence of a proper bite, the back teeth are exposed to damaging forces.
