Classification of malocclusions, Part 2

Classification of malocclusions, Part 2

In a proper bite, the upper teeth only slightly cover the lower teeth. The overlapping part has to be approximately 3 mm. If the upper teeth cover more than 3 mm, this is called an increased overbite or deep bite. When the teeth do not overlap, this is called an open bite.

deep bite is one of the most commonly diagnosed malocclusions. An open bite is less common. When the teeth overlap properly, this has a protective effect on the dentition, as it prevents excessive pressure and force on the teeth in the back of the mouth. In the absence of a proper bite, the back teeth are exposed to damaging forces.
