Orthodontic treatment: how long does it take?

Orthodontic treatment: how long does it take?

One of the main questions every patient asks is how long they will have to wear braces, and how long the orthodontic treatment will take.

The answer is not always easy, since many factors are involved, including the type of malocclusion, whether or not teeth will have to be pulled, the type of appliances to be used in the treatment, etc.

How long braces are worn (evolution)

Today, braces are not worn for 4 or 5 years as was common in the past. Many adult patients tell us that they had worn braces for many years as an adolescent, and now they are inquiring about treatment with Invisalign or another type of invisible braces, such as lingual braces; they have a relapse from not using proper retention for years.

Orthodontic treatment today, in the hands of a good orthodontist, is much faster than years ago, thanks to micro-screws,  self-ligating brackets, more modern wires.

In order for an orthodontic treatment to go quickly and without delays, each step of the treatment must be planned out, and we must know what is going to be done at each moment. The patient’s collaboration with hygiene is necessary and, when indicated by the orthodontist, with placement of elastics.

A good orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from 12 months for simple cases up to 30 months for more complex cases.

A patient with slight crowding can require a few months of treatment, but if he/she presents a Class II (retruded mandible), it can take up to 24 months for a successful solution.

If we carry out orthodontic treatment with extractions, the treatment usually takes from 18 to 24 months, tending more toward a 24-month duration. Treatments with only upper extractions or extraction of one lower incisor are usually faster than a treatment with 4 extractions or when closing spaces from agenesis.

The treatment of unerupted teeth, impacted canines in the palate, usually takes 24-30 months.

If a mandibular advancement appliance is required, combined with brackets, the treatment usually takes 24 months, or in some cases about 18 months.

Invisalign treatments can also take between 12 and 24 months; they sometimes work faster than brackets, depending on the type of malocclusion.

Incognito invisible lingual braces usually require similar durations as vestibular (outside) brackets.

i7 –  Invisalign 7 usually takes 2 to 3 months and is used for corrections requiring small movements

Treatment with Invisalign Lite usually takes from 7 to 12 months

We often receive patients who have been wearing braces for years and who want our opinion — patients who have never been told how long their orthodontic treatment is going to last. We always indicate a treatment time that is the minimum required for correcting the problem that the patient presents. Of course there are complex cases that can take years; however, in most cases the orthodontic treatment lasts between 12 and 24 months.
